In 70-80% of breast cancer cases, it is possible to surgically treat the disease while retaining the breast. The surgeon removes the tumour completely and reshapes the breast so as to avoid postoperative deformations. Conservative breast cancer treatment is most often associated with a sentinel lymph node axillary procedure or axillary node dissection (see below). Conservative treatment is consistently associated with radiation therapy, which will begin within 4 to 6 weeks of surgery.
Duration of the procedure : 1 hr – 90 mins (with sentinel lymph node or axillary node dissection)
Hospitalisation : Outpatient
Recovery time : 2-4 days
